Religious Ceremonies
The day will start with a church procession to where the icon of the Saint will be carried through the street. This is a very spiritual moment that will bring the community very close. The villagers will have little altars in front of their houses with little carpets and flowers, and there will be incense burning. The priest will be given a piece of paper with names written on it that will be put in prayer right there and then when blessings are asked to be given.
In the evening, the square next to the church will transform into a dance floor, enchanting you with traditional Zakynthian music, often featuring instruments such as the bouzouki, lyra, and guitar. On Zakynthos, you will also notice the influence of the mandolin, a remnant of the island's Venetian heritage. The highlight of the evening is the opportunity to dance with neighbors, friends, and family members. Everybody will join in from the young to the elderly, with dances such as the syrtaki, kalamatianos, and for sure the Zakynthian version of the sirtos, These dances will fill the air with laughter, which often last until the early hours of the morning.
No Panigiri, of course, is complete without an endless flow of local delicacies. Souvlaki, grilled meats, and fresh salads are often prepared by the entire village, coming together to honor their strong sense of community. All the food is served with local wines, ouzo, or raki.
